Contract talks between the Yuba City Unified School district and its teachers neared an impasse on Thursday.
The Yuba City Teachers Association said the district's latest proposal "falls far short of comparable salaries and includes a number of serious — permanent — contract concessions."
The district, in a posting on its website, said association representatives have "told the district that they reject the district's proposals and will formally request that the Public Employment Relations Board determine the existence of an impasse and appoint a mediator. The district has told YCTA that it must receive a written proposal from the union before it can comment on whether an impasse exists."
District trustees will meet in closed session this afternoon to review the contract talks and to give directions to their negotiator.
Association members have scheduled a Monday meeting with their bargaining team and "crisis team."
"We will immediately begin taking the next steps in our action plan," the association said.
The district and teachers have been bargaining since 2011 on a new contract.
The association, on its website, said the district's proposals "included an odd set of three salary options, one of which includes no change to compensation for 2011-12 and requires us to begin negotiations all over starting with 2012-13.
And, neither of the other two options brings us anywhere near comparable salaries with Marysville."
The association says the starting salary for its members is 12 percent less than what the Marysville Joint Unified School District offers.
Top teacher salaries in Yuba City are 16 percent behind Marysville, the association said.
