Veterans group could use some fresh faces

I’m writing this letter as a veteran who would like to see some younger vets join the Veterans of Foreign Wars. I have lived in Corning for 30 years and wish I hadn’t waited until two years ago to join. I’m so proud to be a member of our post-burial honor guard. I feel so honored when the family and friends of the deceased vet come up and thank you for giving their loved one the honor he or she deserved for serving their country.

I would like to tell you vets, contrary to what some people in this country would like you to believe, our VFW post doesn’t sit around drinking beer and telling war stories. Our post is involved with community functions, youth awards, scholarships and money for our youth to go to worthy programs around the country.

I think a lot of vets out there don’t think they are eligible to join VFW, but they would be surprised to find out they really are.

I would be pleased to receive any phone calls, day or night, if you would like more information. Call 824-5023 or 526-1488 and ask for Paul.

I want to emphasize we really need vets from the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan. Also other places that weren’t war zones still make you eligible. I know you would be proud to belong to the VFW, so please call and get the information.
