Maria Jordan, 35, stopped at the Corning Observer office Friday while taking a walk along Solano Street. Jordan is new to the area and had just picked up some information on the Olive Festival.

Maria Jordan

"I have really enjoyed going to Shasta Mountain"

Name: Maria Jordan

Age: 35

Family: My son Vincent is 8, and we have family in Sacramento.

City of residence: We just moved to Corning in June.

Occupation: I'm a recent graduate and now I'm studying for the FE (Fundamentals of Engineering) exam.

You aspire to be...: An engineer

Hobbies, interests: I love exploring the outdoors. And when I'm not studying, I like writing poetry or stories. I also play piano.

Tell us about a life-changing experience: Having my son.

What is something unique about you? Hmmm, people point out that I use the word "groovy" often.

Whom do you most admire and why? Well, easiest someone to think of is a celebrity, Jim Carey. He has come a long way in his career and has shown how diverse he can be.

What brought you/family to this area? Besides my car? I lived in Ohio and had never been out West, so to California I came. Tried to find a place with affordable housing.

What's your guilty pleasure? Chocolate

Favorite places to go in the area? I have really enjoyed going to Shasta Mountain.

What is the best advice you have ever received? Never ever, ever, ever, ever give up.

Most embarrassing moment: Getting a bad hair cut. I think I've blocked out all others.

Favorite food: A hot Mediterrean spinach salad I make.

Closest you've been to a famous person: I waved at Danny Glover once in Ohio. I literally bumped into Peter MacNicol, who played the stuttering man (John Cage) in "Ally McBeal." Used to wait on Jim Carrey's ex-mom-in-law.

Favorite musical group and why: I'm really into classical and old country: Hank Wiliams, Johnny Cash.

Favorite movie and why: Anything with Robin Williams. He's also come a long ways in his career and he's just so good at whatever role he assumes.
