Olive industry makes a promising change
According to the California Regional Economic Bulletin - published by the Employment Development Department, (EDD) - "Healthier living and taste for olive oil generate interest for California growers."
National Public Radio reports that California growers planted 7.5 million olive trees over the last 10 years in an effort to compete in the market currently dominated by Spain, Italy, and Greece. California's goals are to streamline the picking and processing of olives to reduce prices and to provide fresher product.
Growers discovered that planting olive trees closer together (in hedgerows) did not affect the yield and facilitated a mechanical harvest.
"There's a promising future ahead for this crop." Says Dan Flynn, head of the Olive Research Center at UC Davis. "With the growth in olive plantings, California could emerge as a world leader in a relatively short period of time. It might take 20 years, but that's how long it took with the other crops."
Special thanks goes to parent club supporters
Cards In Action, CUHS Parents Club would like to thank all of the local restaurants who helped make our "No Dishes for a Week" fundraiser so successful. We had enough donations to draw two winners. Becky Dixon and Deborah McKelvy were our lucky winners this year. Thank you so much for your most appreciated donations!
Volunteers are needed to help with taxes
Community Action is looking for a few good volunteers to help with their volunteer Income Tax Assistance program. They will provide all training, equipment, and materials needed for the program. All they need is you!
Training for volunteers will also include information on the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). You could help them to get back the $1,500,000 in unclaimed EITC in Tehama County! If you are interested or would like more information please contact Lisa Tadlock at 528-4022 or ltadlock@tcdss.org.
