Gang-related stabbing sends man to hospital

A 22-year-old Corning man was stabbed in the upper-back and cut on the forearm during a gang-related attack on Friday night, the Corning police reported.

Efrain Candia was transported to Enloe Medical Center by medical helicopter after he was attacked by "rival gang members" around 7 p.m. at South and Fourth streets, police said.

On Monday, Enloe personnel reported he is no longer a patient at the hospital.

After being stabbed, it appears Candia was taken by car to a relative's home on McLane Avenue, where Tehama County sheriff's deputies responded.

Deputies learned Candia was attacked within Corning city limits and Corning police were called out to take charge of the investigation.

Police reported Candia admitted being a member of an Hispanic street gang and said he had been attacked and stabbed by a rival street gang.

Neighbors in the area believe the fight originated at a party in an apartment complex.

"I saw a bunch of people fighting in the street, and then all of a sudden they jumped into a blue sedan and green SUV and took off," said one neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous.

Another neighbor said he drove up as the fight was going on and saw someone getting beat with baseball bats.

Corning police said the victim is not being very cooperative as they continue investigating the incident.
