Shawn Nieves, 43, of Corning, waits for a downtown shop to open Friday so she can buy some yarn. She enjoys crocheting, gardening and cooking. And after a life-changing experience, she has tried to live life to the fullest.

    What part of your job would you gladly give up? The long hours

    What do you like most about Corning? The small community

    What would you like to change in Corning? The roads and streets are bad in places.

    What is the best advice you have ever received? To take one day at a time.

    Tell us about a life-changing experience: Last year I woke up out of a coma after three days of being on life support. I see the world very differently and I try to live life to the fullest.

    If you were granted one wish, what would you wish for? For time to go back a few years so I could change the biggest mistake of my life.

    Whom do you most admire and why? My husband Sergio and my grandfather John Flucard. My grandfather was also in construction and he died on Oct. 15, 2005. He was the kindest, most dearest and most intelligent man I've known. My husband is the only one who has ever come close to filling his shoes. They both are my heart.

    What are your favorite places to go in the area? The Northside Park with my kids and grandchildren.

    What was your first job? Mowing lawns with BFF David Parker when I was 8 or 9 years old.

    If you were a superhero, what would your power be? To heal the sick.

    What's something you can't live without? My family

    What's something about yourself that your friends might not know? How much I really love them and that I'm afraid that they won't love me.

    Do you have any pet peeves? Empty ice trays in the freezer.

    Something unique about yourself: I can read, write and speak fluent Spanish.

    What kind of pets do you have? A mini Dobi named "Coco," and seven fish

    Hobbies/interests: Crocheting. I was actually waiting for a shop to open to get some yarn. I also like cooking and gardening.

    Where do you get your news? The newspaper and TV

    What's your favorite thing to do on a rainy day? Sleeping in with hubby and drinking coco.

    What is your dream job? Opening a rehab for couples with children.

    What are some of your fondest memories? Growing up in Chapmantown; watching my children from birth just growing and up and starting their own families.

    Favorite book: The Bible

    What are your favorite foods? Seafood

    Favorite musical group: "Sublime"

    If you were reincarnated as an animal, what would you be and why? A bird so I could soar in the sky.

    What's your guilty pleasure? Eating

    What quality in people do you most admire? Honesty and a sense of humor.

    What was your favorite toy as a child? A lifelike doll named "Gordy."

    Favorite superhero? "Aquaman." I love the ocean.

    Favorite television show: "CSI"

    Worst television show: "The Office"

    Favorite movie: "Scarface"

    Worst movie ever made: "Mystic Pizza"

    Worst fear: Losing my family.

    Most embarrassing moment: Wow, falling down at a party in front of everyone.
