BOATING ACCIDENT

Passengers survive boat incident

Three boaters escaped injury after colliding with a concrete piling of the Interstate 5 bridge crossing the Sacramento River just south of the Red Bluff Elk's Lodge, the Tehama County Sheriff's Department reported.

A sheriff's boat patrol witnessed the accident about 6:30 p.m. Sunday, July 18, and assisted boat owner David Jenkins, 60, Gary Jenkins, 46, and the boat's operator, Steven Snider, 24, to safety.

No one was injured. The boat sustained an estimated $4,000 in damage.

Snider advised the officer on scene that a wake of water from a vessel traveling south on the other side of the bridge pilling just west of him, combined with the sun in his eyes, had led to him hitting the bridge.

The vessel was towed by the sheriff's patrol to a boat ramp and released to the owner.
