Pet profile of the week

His formal name is Bosworth, but we call him Bozzie. This one year old Queensland Heeler loves to herd and, like any working

dog, needs to exercise daily. Bozzie loves to play ball and that seems enough to expend his energy. He loved playing in the doggie wading pools when we had them out this summer. Bozzie is a real people dog who wants to please you.

Working breeds like Bozzie need to exercise their minds, too. They like to figure things out. Stuffed Kongs are one of his

favorites. He has to figure out how to get the goodies out. Games like “Which Hand is the Treat In?” are good mind exercise games too.

A quick brushing is about the only grooming Bozzie will need, as his coat is short.

Even though his breed is considered a highenergy breed, he does settle down and loves to cuddle. He would be a lap dog if he could get away with it! If you were lucky enough to be at the Corning Christmas parade November 17, you would have seen Bozzie stretched across the laps of two of our volunteers.

Bozzie knows sit, shake, heel, and we are working on stay. The working breeds are loyal, devoted, very intelligent, watchful, and trustworthy. They are agile, have strength, and endurance. They make fabulous family additions. Bozzie is up to date on

his shots, has been neutered, and ready for a new forever home in time for Christmas!

The herding breed or “pastoral” breed as they are sometimes called, have long assisted their guardians with cattle and sheep.

They are self-motivated and quick to learn.

There are many different breeds of herders and they come in all different sizes. The most common breeds you see around our

area are the classic black and white Border Collie and Blue or Red Merle Queensland Heeler and Australian Shepherd. Some of

the other breeds that herd are the Old English Sheepdog, Kelpie, Sheltie (also known as the Shetland Sheepdog), Collies, German Shepherds, Samoyed, Anatolian Shepherd, and Corgis. Many other types of herding dogs are used in Europe and the UK that we don’t see in our area.

Herding dogs don’t always have to “round up” things. They can be happy going out and getting the paper, having a doggie backpack on with water for you in it, anything that they can do that feels like they have a job.

If you would like more information on Bosworth please contact Second Chance Pet Rescue at 824-1985 or the Corning Animal

Shelter at 824-7054. If Bosworth is not your kind of dog, give us a call and we will let you know about the other fabulous dogs in the shelter that might be a perfect fit for your home.
