Charles Crago places his American flag in his front yard on Sixth Street in Corning. He said he plans to sit in his yard and watch neighbors set off their fireworks this Fourth of July.

Fun Fourth on tap

Corning has lots in store for this year

Corning residents have a variety of local options to celebrate the Fourth of July this year.

For those wanting to celebrate at home there are fireworks to buy at any number of booths located along Solano Street starting Sunday.

This year fireworks approved by the state fire marshal will be allowed in the city of Corning, said Corning Fire Chief Martin Spannaus. The same is required in Tehama County.

“If the fireworks, fly, scurry or blow up, they are illegal,” said Mickie Jakez, Cal Fire public information officer.

Anyone in Corning wanting to go out of town, but not too far, for Fourth of July fun and fireworks has the option to travel to Orland, Red Bluff or Los Molinos.

Those trekking north can enjoy a full-day of fun at the Heritage Days Celebration and fireworks show held at the Tehama County District Fairgrounds, 650 Antelope Blvd., Red Bluff. Activities include lawnmower races, a five-event strong man contest, teen miss pageant and variety show, carnival rides, food and refreshment booths, local car show n’shine, live musical entertainment, kiddie games and activities, and possible horseshoe pitching competition.

The Red Bluff fireworks Show, also at the fairgrounds, will begin at 9:45 p.m.

Moving south to Orland, there will be an Old-Fashioned Fourth of July at Vinsonhaler Park, at Shasta and A streets. The fun will begin at noon and will run all day with food and concession booths, children’s games, live musical performances, awards, car show, decorated hat, pet and bike contest, frog jumping contest, races and more, ending at 5 p.m. There will be no fireworks display at this event.

The smallest, but definitely not the least, is the traditional celebration held in Los Molinos. The event starts at 10 a.m. with a Pride and Freedom parade that marches right through town on Highway 99E, followed by Play Day at Mill Creek Park, on Tehama-Vina Road just east of the Sacramento River, where families can enjoy food and games and awards are presented to parade winners.
