Corning teacher passes

CUESD mourns loss of Martinez

The staffs and students of many of Corning's elementary schools were saddened to hear of the recent passing of Sandi Martinez, who had taught in the district the past 10 years. Martinez passed away May 6 in her home.

She was teaching first-grade this year at West Street School, and had previously taught both at Woodson Elementary and Maywood Middle Schools.

Steve Kelish, district superintendent said of Martinez, "She was such a positive force in our district and a person we all respected and liked. Her death was a shock to us all."

West Street School planned a ceremony for 10:30 Friday where they were planting a tree, singing a song and releasing a balloon in celebration of Martinez' life.

Rob Newton, West Street principal, explained, "We hope this will help bring closure to the students."
