Council recognizes January as Mentoring Month
"Tehama County's Mentoring Program has been very successful," Melissa Mendoca, mentoring coordinator, said during Tuesday's city council meeting as she accepted the city's proclamation recognizing January as Mentoring Month.
Mendoca said the program is thriving in Corning and hopes it to do so for many more years.
"We have plenty of children in the program but could always use more adult mentors," Mendoca said.
Corning Mayor Gary Strack, who presented Mendoca with the proclamation is a mentor in the program.
According to the proclamation, research on mentoring shows that formal, high quality mentoring focused on developing the competence and character of the mentee, promotes positive outcomes such as improved academic achievement, self-esteem, social skills and career development.
The county's program matches dependable, caring adults with a young people in need of the programs goals of providing guidance, support, and encouragement the development of social, emotional, and cognitive skills.
Tehama County Mentoring Program has awarded and recognized on both a state and national level.
