Adult Day Care program shuts down
Corning's Adult Day Care closing its doors for good
After 12 years of service, Corning’s Adult Day Care has closed its doors for good.
On June 24, the state-funded program came to an end because of state cuts for adult services, program volunteer Judy Turner said. The last session was the annual Hawaiian luau, which included hula dancer Lani Coelho of Red Bluff.
The respite program met with dependent adults for five hours weekly, giving primary caregivers time for themselves.
The program was established in 1997 when Connie Massie, the original program coordinator, put out a call for volunteers. A core group including Eleanor Oldfield, Sylvia Meents, Maxine Proctor, Ruth Ratay, Barbara Stromsness and Bob Eden helped begin the program. Oldfield eventually took over as program coordinator, and Meents and Proctor have been volunteers all 12 years of the program.
Over the years, Travis Welty, Jean Welty, Beverly Jackson, Ruth Holler, Linda Fazzori, Art Witter and John Trivilpiece have helped fill out the team.
“The respite program also was fun for the participants as they participated in a variety of activities including exercise, mental stimulation and socialization,” Turner said.
