It’s full swing for recreation
Beck has recreation activities up and moving right along
Corning residents finding themselves with nothing to do this summer apparently aren't trying hard enough, because Corning Recreation Department programs and activities have been drawing rave attendance and reviews.
Kimberly Beck, Corning Recreation Department supervisor on Tuesday presented a report to the Recreation Commission on what has taken place so far this year, and also previewed ideas she is working on for winter.
Among the youth activities already wrapped up include the Corning Rotary Youth Basketball Camp at Maywood Middle School that drew 17 participants from third- through eighth-grade. Campers worked on teamwork, good sportsmanship and the fundamentals of basketball, and each went home with a camp T-shirt.
The Baseball Hitting Camp was a homerun for its 24 participants as well. Campers ages 10 to 14 learned proper mechanics of the swing, hitting with more power and also the mental approach to hitting. Campers also got to suit up with a new T-shirt.
The men's adult basketball league has also tipped off with 52 players, with games being held Tuesday nights at CUHS.
Beck also reported that many parents asked if the Recreation Department was going to offer any additional hitting camps or other baseball skills camps.
She also presented a list of winter activities still in the works, which included both athletic and non-athletic recreational opportunities.
Volunteer participation is also a necessity for the continued success of the recreation program, and volunteer forms are available at the recreation department office in the Transportation Center, 1081 Solano St.
The Summer Activities Guide is available at city hall, the recreation office and at local businesses, and is available online at www.corning.org.
