Cardinal Drill Team flies high during annual show

Dancers thrill crowd with great routines and style

The Corning Drill Team strutted its stuff recently, hosting its annual show in the Corning High School gymnasium.

The evening topped off a season where each member got plenty of kicks (literally), and the practice-makes-perfect attitude showed through a broad range of dance styles and performances. Many of the dancers were performing routines that they had themselves choreographed, and the dances included group and solo numbers.

The show also provided an opportunity for the senior members to recognize their parents for the help and support they provided throughout the drill team experience. The graduating seniors and their parents are: Syerra Eickmeyer, (Todd and Kendall Eickmeyer); Marvick Gutierrez, (Angelica Mendoza); Stephanie Sawyer-Glover (Larry and Deanna Glover, Les Sawyer); Lindsey Henderson (Chris and Rosalie Henderson); Katie McCabe (Kathy and Mike McCabe); and Mallory Vader (Bill and Nanette Vader).

Following the performances, the Drill Team handed out awards to some of its members. Winners were: Most Improved - Regan Albee and Christine Acosta (both first-year members); Performers of the Year - Marvick Gutierrez, Mattie Maloney and Mallory Vader; Coach's Award - Hilary Rice; Miss Congeniality - Arielle Patton; Leadership Award - Mallory Vader; and Cardette of the Year - Mallory Vader.

In addition to being extremely talented, this year's squad also boasted a team G.P.A. of 3.45, with Mallory Vader, Bethany Vader, Heather Cantrell, Karla Damian and Stephanie Sawyer-Glover being the top five.

"I was very proud of the girls," said Lindsay Reimers, coach. "Some of them had back-to-back performances and that isn't easy. They put on an excellent show and I couldn't have asked for it to go better."

Reimers added, "I also want to thank all of the parents and community members who have been extremely supportive throughout the year. The girls love performing in front of large crowds, and the audience cheers make them want to smile bigger and dance more!"

How do you spell waste of time and money? C-U-H-S D-R-I-L-L T-E-A-M. How can this district lay off a special ed teacher and keep the drill team coach? Way to go Bruce Cole!
