Washington women hurt in crash

Two women from Washington received major injuries when the vehicle they were in crashed into a large oak tree on Tuesday.

California Highway Patrol reported Lanie Marie Johnson, 19, of Tacoma, was driving a 2006 Ford southbound on Interstate 5 north of Sunset Hills when Johnson diverted her attention from driving allowing the vehicle to go off the left side of the roadway.

The vehicle collided with a large oak tree in the center divider of the freeway, causing major injuries to Johnson and her passenger, Ashley Johnson, 22, of Tacoma, both of whom were wearing seatbelts, CHP said.

Both victims were transported to Mercy Medical Center in Redding. Lanie is listed in serious condition and Ashley in good condition, according to a Mercy spokesperson.

Drugs or alcohol were not mentioned as a factor in the collision.
