Weaver, the storm survival victim recovering

The storm of 2008 claimed one soul who most people wouldn’t care about. He was a young boy, about 9 months old. Even though his leg was a mess, he smiled and wagged his tail. Weaver came into the Corning Animal Shelter destined to die. The city does not have funds to repair a dog that falls victim to such extensive damage.

But the City of Corning has an animal advocate working within its antiquated animal shelter walls. That advocate is Second Chance Pet Rescue. As we helped carry Weaver into the shelter, saw his leg dangling precariously, we knew he had suffered major damage. But he wagged his tail and hasn’t stopped wagging it yet.

Weaver saw the vet the next day and x-rays were taken, which Second Chance paid for. Four breaks were found in his leg. Repair was out of the question due to costs. Weaver had an alternative. Even though we knew Weaver had to have been in intense pain, we saw a well-balanced, happy, young dog. Second Chance Pet Rescue decided that this young dog deserved to live and we opted to have his damaged leg amputated.

We had a very generous offer to foster Weaver during his recovery period but unfortunately, the home had other dogs and we felt that Weaver needed to be the only dog in a foster home so that there would be no risk of further damage. We are still hoping that there is a foster home out there for Weaver where he can recover in a real home instead of a solitary confinement pen.

Weaver has impeccable house manners. He has never pottied in his pen but waits for his outside time, which he gets twice a day. A shelter is no place for a dog, let alone a dog who just had an amputation. Second Chance is asking for a short-term foster home where Weaver can recover and then be placed for adoption.

Weaver is current on all vaccinations and Second Chance Pet Rescue paid for his neuter at the same time his leg was amputated so he wouldn’t have to go under anesthetic twice. This boy is a true survivor. Does he have a place in your heart or home?

Donations may be sent to Second Chance Pet Rescue, Weaver Medical Fund, 4312 Rawson Rd., Corning, CA 96021. Second Chance Pet Rescue is an IRS recognized non-profit organization and contributions are tax deductible under IRS regulations.
