Albee going to Tabor
Corning graduate heading to college in Kansas
The Tabor College women's basketball program has landed Corning High School graduate Regan Albee.
Albee, a 5-foot, 5-inch guard, was the All-Northern Athletic League MVP her senior year and helped the Cardinals win back-to-back NAL titles.
As a junior, she was also part of the Lady Cardinals' Northern Section Division IV championship squad.
She was recruited locally by Shasta College of Redding, but decided she wanted to experience life outside of the North State. She filled out a Tabor questionnaire online and organized a trip to Kansas over Corning's spring break in April.
"I loved it there," Albee said. "I got to practice with the team and there are a bunch of awesome players, so I'm really excited to be a part of such a great team and program."
Tabor head coach Shawn Winter is equally excited to add Albee to his 2010-11 roster.
"We are thrilled to have Regan decide on Tabor College to continue her education and
basketball career," Winter said. "She has a high level of Christian character, loves the game of basketball, and is a very good student."
Albee earned the California Scholarship Federation seal for being a lifelong member of the honor roll during high school, and earned an academic scholarship of $10,000 from Tabor, with another $2,500 for athletics. Overall, about two-thirds of her tuition will be paid for by the school.
Albee credits her family and two Corning coaches, Curt Eller and John Studer, for helping her reach the next level.
"My family is so awesome and always supportive of me in academics, athletics and life in general," Albee said.
She is the daughter of Mike and Dena Albee.
"I've also had a lot of support from my coaches, Curt Eller in particular," she said.
Eller coached Albee at the varsity level in basketball her senior year and as a junior varsity player in 2008. Studer is a history teacher and did not coach Albee directly, but heads the varsity football program and is a class adviser.
"He always pushed me to be a better player and he is just an awesome coach," Albee said of Eller. "I really appreciate all the help and support he's given me through the years. Mr. Studer has also helped me so much these past couple years. I really appreciate everything he's done for me."
Albee plans to major in liberal arts at Tabor and become an elementary school teacher.
She looks forward to the opportunities of moving to a new place and meeting new people.
"I've always really wanted to get away from Corning just to experience something and some place new," Albee said. "I am really excited that I will get that opportunity this year."
Tabor is a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and competes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
Albee is the fifth athlete from Tehama County to earn a scholarship to Tabor in recent years. Fellow 2010 alum, and her boyfriend, Fontaine Richardson, will play football this fall, and 2002 graduate Joe Fenske also played football there, along with Tyler McKim and John Ohm of Red Bluff.
