Varsity Girls Basketball

West Valley 47, Corning 37

Karlie Jennings led the way with 15 points, and the Lady Cardinals got six-point performances from Marisa Vinson, Keara Terras and Gates Fears, but it was not enough to prevent a 10-point loss Friday in Cottonwood.

Corning (5-15, 0-5 NAL) plays in Anderson Friday.

Boys Soccer

Mercy 2, Colusa 1

The Warriors scored a goal in each half and made it stand up for an SVL-Two win over Colusa in Red Bluff on Thursday.

Fernando Vives and Dennis Doan found the back of the net for Mercy, with Vives notching his eight goal of the season and Doan, his third.

Vives also assisted on Doan's score.

Alejandro Guerrero was busy between the pipes, making 13 saves.

Tyler Stirling scored the RedHawks goal, with an assist by Eddy Reyes.

Mercy (6-6, 3-3 SVL-Two) played at Williams Tuesday, and closes its regular season at Esparto Thursday.

Live Oak 8, Los Molinos 0

Visiting Live Oak scored four goals in each half in Los Molinos on Thursday to keep the Bulldogs in search of their first win of the season.

Salvador Vargas, Joel Cibrian and Jose Cuellar each scored a pair of goals for Live Oak.

Los Molinos (0-12, 0-6 SVL-One) hosted Pierce Tuesday, and closes out the season Thursday at Willows.

Girls Soccer

Corning 8, Central Valley 0

It was all Cardinals at home Thursday, as Corning erupted for five first-half goals and added three more in the second to improve to 12-4 on the season and 6-2 in the NAL.

Caitlin McCoy and Patrica Ibarra each put a pair of balls into the net for Corning, with single goals coming from Mayra Sanchez, Magdaelena Ramirez, Maria Diaz and Jenny Santos.

Ramirez provided a pair of assists, with McCoy, Diaz, Krystal Bennet and Carrolina Carillo also dishing out assists.

Corning made the long trip to play at Lassen on Tuesday, and hosts Anderson Thursday for their regular-season finale.

JV Wrestling

Corning fourth at North Valley Championships

The Cardinals' junior varsity finished fourth with 121 team points in the North Valley JV Championships wrestled Saturday at Orland High.

Orland captured the championship with 226 points, and the remaining top-five squads were Chico (225), Paradise (191) and West Valley (115.5).

Corning's Josh Meraz took first in the 120-pound weight class and won the Outstanding Lightweight Awards, while Aiden Nye was the Outstanding Middleweight as he took the 138-pound championship.

Josh Shults (126) finished in third place, fifth-place showings were turned in by Devon Hiller (106) and Shane Hansen (113), while Calvin Abel came in sixth at 195.

"We had a good day. We took 18 kids, 14 of them freshmen, and had a third of them place," said Corning coach Cort Mitchell.

JV Boys Basketball

West Valley 44, Corning 35

The Cardinals were stopped at home Friday, as they fell to 1-111 on the season and 2-3 in the NAL.

Brandon Olsen's 11 points led the scoring effort, with Alan Rodriguez adding eight and Tyelar Nelson and Austin Duby, four apiece.

Anton Torres patrolled the pain for a team-best 14 rebounds, and Nelson pestered the Eagles for five steals.

Frosh Girls Basketball

West Valley 30, Corning 17

The Lady Cardinals suffered their first loss of the season Friday in Cottonwood, as Avree Mulliner paced the scoring effort with nine points and Sarah Boone pitched in five.

"This was a really tough loss to take," said Corning coach Jason Armstrong. "I fully expected us to play well, and from start to finish we really looked tired. We simply picked a bad night to have a bad night."

Corning fell to 14-6 overall, and 4-1 in the NAL.
