Top sports moments: Cardinal boys soccer beaten in shootout
You could cut the tension with a knife on the soccer pitch at Corning High on Feb. 28
After neither side scored during regulation time, the two 10-minute overtimes or the pair of five-minute overtimes, all the member of the Corning and Las Plumas soccer teams lined up at midfield for a shootout to determine the Northern Section Division I champion.
Both sides put four balls in during the first series of five shots, but the Thunderbirds won the second series and the championship, by a score of 5-3.
Corning was without the services of six players who were ineligible due to violating a Northern Section rule that forbids playing soccer in any type of league while also playing for a high school.
"It can't get any closer," said Corning coach Ascension Llamas, "it's too bad, because I thought we dominated during the game."
Corning went undefeated in league play to take the Northern Athletic League championship with a 10-0 mark, and closed out the season with a record of 12-2-1.
