Corning grapplers settle for 2nd place
By the narrowest of margins the Corning High wrestling team was edged for the championship of the Northern Athletic League in Susanville on Saturday.
"We lost a heartbreaker to Anderson by two points, literally in the last match of the say when the Anderson heavyweight pinned the Central Valley heavyweight to earn eight points for the team," said Corning coach Cort Mitchell.
"There was an element of luck involved," the coach continued, "as Anderson drew three out-bracket matches, which gave them an opportunity to earn extra bonus points, as we didn't draw any."
All was not lost for a pair of Corning wrestlers, as Josh Shults (132 pounds) and Evan McFadden (170) both finished first in their weight class to earn All-League honors.
"We had the opportunity to win," Mitchell said. "We just needed to win one more match, or get one more pin instead of a regular decision, and we couldn't quite get it done. We wrestled well enough to win, but it just wasn't meant to be."
Earning silver finishes for the Cardinals were Devon Hiller (106), Alex DeJesus (113), Hector Valencia (120), Seth Danielson (138), Dakota Henry (145), Ben Meister (152) and Juan Ruiz (182).
Third-place finishers were Allen Cervantes (106), Tony Carrillo (160), Calvin Abel (195), Sean Dillon (220) and Braulio Ruiz (285).
The Division II championships are being contested Friday in Orland.
