Rogers homers twice for Cardinals
The Corning varsity baseball team lost both of its league games last week, blowing a six-run lead in the last inning against West Valley and dropping another slugfest versus Anderson.
Corning led Anderson, 6-3, but couldn’t overcome the Cubs’ seven-run sixth inning on Friday, falling 11-8 at home in the league finale.
Drew Rogers belted a home run and finished 2-for-3 with three runs batted in, and Tanner McIntyre was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run scored. Jake Johnson collected two hits, including a double, and Nick Simcox also scored twice.
Rogers pitched 5 1/3 innings, exiting after giving up five hits and three earned runs. Clint Lacy suffered the loss after giving up four unearned runs without recording an out, and McIntyre and Blake Goss combined to finish the game in relief.
P.J. Bixby and Evan Mulliner added a hit and a run scored for the Cardinals.
Against West Valley last Tuesday, Corning’s 5-0 and 11-5 leads unraveled in the first and seventh innings, respectively, in a disappointing 12-11 defeat.
Goss lasted six innings on the mound, surrendering 11 runs (seven earned) on 13 hits while walking three and striking out six. McIntyre relieved in the seventh hoping to stop the bleeding, but he was stuck with the loss after giving up two hits and the unearned, game-winning run.
Rogers crushed the ball at the plate, going 4-for-5 with a double and a home run, knocking in four runs and scoring twice. Evan Mulliner also pounded a double and a homer, drilling five RBI with two runs scored, and McIntyre went 3-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Bixby went 2-for-4 with a double, Goss also had two hits and Manny Garcia crossed the plate twice for the Cardinals.
JV Baseball
The Corning JV baseball team capped its undefeated league season with wins against West Valley and Anderson last week, going 10-0 in the
Northern Athletic League and 15-1 on the year.
Last Tuesday, the Cardinals scored in six different innings to overcome host West Valley, 12-5.
Cody Fox pitched into the seventh inning and gave up five runs (three earned) on eight hits. He walked four and struck out five, netting his sixth win of the season, and teammate Michael Garcia closed it out in relief.
Casey Cleland and Daniel Mahutga both homered for the Cardinals and Tyler McIntyre was 4-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Cleland drove in four runs, Dakota Russ scored twice and Marc Mason had a single and sacrifice fly.
Mason hurled a one-hit shutout to beat Anderson, 10-0, in five innings Friday in the Cardinals’ season finale. He walked just two batters and struck out seven, winning his fourth game of the season.
Mahutga led the offense, clubbing a double and a triple. He finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and Quintin Flores was 2-for-3 with a double. David Marin also hit a two-run single and scored twice.
