Corning takes advantage of Red Bluff, forfeits

The Corning girls tennis team defeated Red Bluff, 6-3, on Thursday afternoon in their season opener via four victories and two forfeits.

In the ace slot, Victoria Owens cruised past Courtney Boes in a pair of 6-1 sets, but teammate Elle Davis prevailed against Dina Menendes by default.

Davis led the first set by three games, 5-2, when Menendes succumbed to heat exhaustion.

At No. 3, Dorinda Walker rallied in the second set against Alli Divine but lost 6-0, 6-4. Corning's Monique Davis swept Alli Madison in 6-3 sets and Mayela Luevano fell to Red Bluff's Ashley Hone, 6-1, 6-3.

Kathy Mahutga won her first set against Hailie Keyton, 6-4, and slammed the door with a 6-0 shutout in the second set.

Owens and Elle Davis were leading Boes and Divine on the ace doubles court, 2-1, when the top Lady Spartans duo were forced to forfeit due to an injury.

Walker and Monique Davis stopped Madison and Hone by a score of 7-5 and Luevano and Mahutga lost to Josie and Samantha Clements, 6-1.
