Cardinal grapplers pin back West Valley

The race to the Northern Athletic League wrestling pennant heated up Wednesday when Corning upset West Valley, 38-22, at home to improve to 3-1 in NAL duals.

Eric Miranda and Sean Lowe earned Outstanding Wrestler honors with key wins in the team's victory. Miranda earned a 10-6 decision against the Eagles' Zack Schall at 191 pounds and Lowe (121) swatted Matt Gardner, 20-4, for a technical fall.

Thomas Marshall edged Austin Lobsinger, 2-1, at 217s, and Martin Solano gained a forfeit win at 114s, but Corning only led 17-13 after Lowe's victory.

Tanner Johnson kept the Cardinals' momentum going with a 6-1 decision against Sammy Jones (127), and Misael Morales lost by fall to Spencer Mojarro (132).

Cole Holland picked up a critical victory for Corning at 137, defeating Sammy Morales in overtime, 8-6, and Nick Johnson pinned Tyler Lucero at 142 to help Corning pick up more steam.

Jake Morales of West Valley fended off Calvin Meister, 3-1, at 147 but Jonathan Jones (154) stumped Jesse Robbins in the first period for a key Corning pin.

Billy Crawford iced the victory for the Cardinals with a 4-0 shutout of Forrest Fells at 162 pounds.

The final straightaway sprint takes place next weekend in Anderson at the NAL Varsity Championships. The JV, 57-18 winners over Anderson, compete Saturday at Orland's North Valley JV Championships.
