Westside sweeps pair in twinbill

The Westside Braves 17-and-under American Legion baseball club swept the Red Bluff Toros and Shasta Lake Bass in a doubleheader at Wynn Price Field in Shasta Lake on June 28.

Westside 9, Red Bluff 0

With Cody Fox on the mound, Red Bluff was powerless to stop the Braves, as they won 9-0.

Fox hurled a two-hit shutout, walking one batter, hitting a batter and striking out six. The Toros never got a runner past second base, as Fox breezed through all seven innings with just 84 pitches.

Westside plated two unearned runs in the first inning, starting when Tyler McIntyre reached on a two-out error. Alex Costa was hit by a pitch and Casey Cleland ripped a two-run double into the left-center field gap.

Cole MacLachlan picked up the big hit in the second inning, knocking in two more runs with a two-bagger. Daniel Mahutga walked, Fox singled and Austin Grootveld laid down a sacrifice bunt to set up the rally.

Westside increased its lead to 5-0 in the third when McIntyre homered over the left-center field fence. The ball was crushed, clearing the wall easily despite the breeze blowing in.

The Toros avoided further damage in the fourth, as Mahutga doubled to lead off the inning. He was doubled up on a line drive by MacLachlan that was fielded by Toros shortstop Brad Paschall.

The Braves widened the gap in the sixth, however, to put the game out of reach. Marc Mason singled and Mahutga and Fox reached on back-to-back walks to load the bases. Mason and Mahutga both scored on wild pitches and MacLachlan was able to reach on a strikeout, scoring Fox on the passed ball. Costa added a RBI single to score the game’s final run.

The Braves pounded out 14 hits and McIntyre pitched five strong innings in Westside’s 17-4 victory over the Bass hosts in the nightcap two Saturdays ago.

Westside plated four runs with two outs in the third inning to set the tone for the remainder of the game.

McIntyre singled and stole second base, scoring on a Costa single, and Mahutga walked to put runners on first and second. Cleland swatted a run-scoring single, Ethan Schmeltzer followed suit to score Mahutga and after Fox loaded the bases with a walk, Grootveld added another RBI single.

The Braves offense continued to fire on all cylinders in the fourth, starting with a leadoff single by Mason. McIntyre also singled and Costa spanked a two-run single, making the score 6-0 in favor of Westside. Mahutga singled and Cleland walked to load the bases. After an infield fly, Fox drove a sacrifice fly to right and Grootveld spanked a two-run single.

In the fifth inning, Mason singled and McIntyre was hit by a pitch to set up Mahutga’s two-run single, who later scored on an error.

McIntyre exited with a comfortable 12-3 lead, allowing three earned runs on four hits for the victory. Mason closed on the hill, pitching the final inning.

Westside added five more runs in the sixth for good measure. Fox singled and Grootveld reached on an error with no outs. After a strikeout, the next six batters reached base to drive in five runs. Mason was hit by a pitch to load the bases, McIntyre, Costa, Mahutga and Cleland walked in succession to force in runs and Schmeltzer capped the rally with a RBI single.

The Braves improved their record to 7-8 entering the Shasta Lake Bass’ seventh annual 4th of July Tournament.
