Cardinals shock Shasta in semis
Corning High's boys soccer team is making a return trip to the Division I title game, much to the shock and surprise of top-seeded Shasta.
The fifth-seeded Cardinals (17-3-2) capitalized on an own goal by the Wolves (14-2-2) and scored two of their own - all in the second half - to knock out the top seed 3-0 in Redding on Tuesday.
The Record Searchlight reported that Corning's Diego Figueroa headed a ball toward the middle of the net early in the second half, when a Shasta defender tried to clear the spinning ball but instead put it past the Wolves' keeper.
Figueroa, the top goal scorer in Division I, scored his 21st goal of the season off a corner kick, and Mario Campos added an insurance goal later for the final margin of victory. It was Campos' ninth goal of the year.
Marvin Umana made nine saves to earn the shutout in goal.
Coring travels to Chico on Saturday to face the second-seeded Panthers (13-4). The two teams did not meet during the season.
Last season the Cardinals fell to Las Plumas in the finals, losing a shootout 9-7.
Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
