Orland major team shuts out Eastside
Orland edged Eastside 3-0 in the District 47 major baseball all-stars tournament thanks to a strong pitching effort by hard-throwing Andrew Shippelhoute on Tuesday at Willows.
Shippelhoute went the distance and gave up three hits, only one of which got out of the infield. He struck out 10 batters and walked only two. No Eastside player advanced past second base.
Meanwhile Orland scored one in the first inning and added two insurance runs in the fifth.
Weston Foster walked, stole second and scored on Levi Paschall’s basehit up the middle.
Paschall came up with the big hit again in the fifth. Austin Burbank got the rally started when he singled with one out. Foster then bounced the ball back to the pitcher, who threw errantly to second base allowing Burbank to advance to third. Garrett Ferreira lashed a shot past the second baseman to plate Burbank. Paschall then capped the rally with an opposite field basehit down the leftfield line that brought home Foster.
Orland and Willows played on Wednesday in the second round. Results were unavailable at press time.
9-10 Baseball
Orland lost to Westside on Tuesday, 11-0, at Chico Central and will play Paradise North on Saturday at 10 a.m. in an elimination game.
Willows, meanwhile, fell to Palermo 12-3 on Tuesday and will play Eastside Grey on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Gridley in an elimination contest.
Junior baseball
Orland stayed alive in the junior baseball all-stars tournament with a 14-7 win over Westside on Tuesday.
Orland will play today at 10 a.m. against an opponent to be determined.
Willows played Palermo in the semifinals on Thursday. Results were unavailable at press time.
9-10 Softball
Orland lost its tournament opener to Durham on Monday, but no score was reported. Orland played Eastside in an elimination game on Wednesday, but results were not available at press time.
Willows defeated Biggs 18-1 at Chico Eastside on Monday, but fell to the elimination bracket on Tuesday after an 11-0 loss to Westside. Willows played an elimination game against Central on Wednesday but the score was not available.
11-12 Softball
Orland edged Lake Oroville on Tuesday 4-3 and played Willows on Wednesday at Durham. Willows won its opener over Durham last week 17-13.
The Willows Major all-star softball team defeated Durham 13-7 in an exciting extra-inning game on June 26th in Durham to open the first round of the District 47 tournament.
Rylee Smith got the win on the mound going 7 innings and only giving up 2 earned runs and 6 hits in the win. Meagan Hughes led the team offensively going 3 for 4 at the plate with double, triple and 4 RBI’s.
Willows got behind early giving up 4 runs in the bottom of the first on 1 hit and 3 errors. Willows was able to get a run back in the top of the second when pinch runner, Justine McCorkle, crossed the plate on a single by Alyssa Beatty. Durham answered back in the bottom of the second with a 2 out single by Jessica Young to take a 5-1 lead going into the third.
Willows was able to cut the lead to one after scoring 3 runs in the top of the third on a single by Hughes who stole second and scored on a passed ball. Macy Baker and Samantha Brott also scored after reaching base on balls and scored on passed balls.
Willows went out strong in the fourth and scored 4 runs after a leadoff walk to Smith, Garet Hanson and Natalie Massa had back to back singles and Hughes came through with a bases clearing double. Hughes would later score on a passed ball.
Willows was just 3 outs away from victory with a 13-7 lead going into the bottom of the sixth, but committed 4 errors, 2 bases on balls and a single to allow Durham to tie the game at 13 apiece.
Willows started the top of the seventh with their leadoff hitter, Garet Hanson, who answered the call with a clutch single. Natalie Massa followed with a bunt single to set the table for Hughes who came through with a triple giving Willows a 15-13 lead. Hughes was able to cross the plate on a passed ball. Samantha Brott who walked, stole second also scored on a passed ball giving Willows a 17-13 lead to the bottom of the seventh.
Rylee Smith only needed three pitches to finish off the inning after getting the two, three and four hitters to pop up. Hanson was 3 for 5. Massa was 2 for 5. Hughes was 3 for 4 with 4 RBI’s. Brott was 1 for 2. Delainy Ward was 2 for 5 with an RBI. Astin Keolanui and McKenzie Culp played solid defensively for Willows.
Junior Softball
Willows opens junior softball all-stars play on Monday against Paradise South at 6 p.m. in Willows.
Orland will also host the junior tournament and will play either Lake Oroville or Durham on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at Vinsonhaler Park.
