Varsity Boys Basketball

Chester 68, Mercy 30

Malachi Jones scored 17 points but Mercy's next-highest scorer was Franceso Addonizio with six points in Mercy's home loss on Friday.

"The Warriors really struggled on the offensive end in the first half, scoring just four points," said Mercy coach Steve Shellabarger. "The second half, we played them to a 27-27-tie."

He added, "Defensively, we were pretty solid. Chester is a very good team that is big, quick and can shoot."

Mercy (4-16, 0-7 Five Star League) hosts Liberty on Friday.

Girls Soccer

Corning 6, Yreka 0

Laura Madera notched a hat trick on her birthday, and Anissa Munoz, Caitlin McCoy and Ana Carrillo helped her celebrate with a goal apiece at home on Thursday.

McCoy, Munoz and Patricia Ibarra assisted as Corning improved to 11-7 on the year and 6-2 in the Northern Athletic League).

Kaitlyn Huntley made five saves for the Lady Cardinals.

Corning played at Lassen on Tuesday, and closes the regular season on Thursday on the road against Central Valley.

Boys soccer

Corning 6, Yreka 0

The Cardinals' boys squad upped their NAL-leading record to 7-0-1 and improved to 13-3-2 on the season with Thursday's home win over the Miners.

The Cardinals traveled to Susanville to battle Lassen on Tuesday, and wrap the season on Thursday playing Central Valley.

JV Girls Basketball

Corning 55, Yreka 54

The JV Lady Cardinals needed every one of Avree Mulliner's 15 points and Sofia Oliverez's 10 to hold off Yreka on Friday. Maddy Caputo added nine points for Corning, Bailie Fryar had seven and Kaylee Shoemaker, five.

Chester 29, Mercy 18

Maddie Flynn had a huge game for the JV Lady Warriors, putting up 11 points and collecting 20 rebounds. Gillie Coelho added four points, dished out six assists and grabbed five rebounds.

JV Boys Basketball

Mercy 55, Chester 47

Reid Gardner put up a double-double of 19 points and 10 rebounds, and Bryce Baer recorded one as well with 14 points and 18 rebounds on Friday. Teddy Ranberg chipped in with 13 points and made six steals.

JV Wrestling

Cards ninth in Orland tourney

The Corning High junior varsity wrestling team finished ninth out of 17 teams on Saturday at the Orland Novice Tournament.

Sean Dillon captured the championship of the 222-pound class; Quinton Jones (197) and Braulio Ruiz (287) were fifth; and Cody Evans finished sixth at 222.

"We finished about as expected. All year, we've been medaling about half our guys and placing in the middle of the pack," said Corning coach Cort Mitchell. "I expected that we would have finished in the top three and had about seven more medals."
