Cardinal runners advance
The Corning track and field team competed in the Northern Athletic League Finals on Friday in Yreka and left with 35 top-five finishes individually as well as several strong relay performances.
Jacob Brannon placed in four events to lead the Cardinals varsity, as he won the silver in pole vault (13’), bronze in 110 hurdles (15.99) and 300 hurdles (43.16) and fifth in triple jump (38’7 1/2”).
Sean McFadden took second in the 800, just barely ahead of fourth-place teammate Kevin Anthony (2:14.02 to 2:14.52) and Javier Piseno won a silver in shot put (44’ 11 1/2”).
Anthony added fifth place in the 1600 (5:15), Matt Barr was fifth in high jump (5’4”) and Miguel Hernandez placed fourth in the 400 (54.01).
Danielle Beardsley led the varsity girls 100 relay squad to a silver title and also placed in three events individually, spearheading the 200 title (26.96), sprinting to silver in the 100 (13.06) and fourth in triple jump (29’ 1/4”).
She also ran with Arielle Patton, Lauren Umphenour and Mallory Vader in the relay, netting a time of 54.09 seconds.
Vader and Patton took third and fifth place, respectively, in pole vault (7’6” to 7’) and Patton took home a double bronze in the hurdle events, with times of 17.78 in the 100 and 55.61 in the 300.
Tara Pankowski also had a productive day, leading the 400 relay squad to second place (5:07) with Vader, Umphenour and Katelyn Statton sharing the honor. She also placed fifth in the 800 (2:57) and high jump (4’) while teammate Stephanie Glover earned fifth place in triple jump (23’ 6 1/4”).
The Cardinals junior varsity brought home the most titles of all, with 12 of the team’s individual top-five finishers.
Jamie Davila earned second place in the 400 (56.05) and fifth in the 200 (24.88) while also running on two relay groups. With Blaine Glover, Herminio Miranda and Jose Torres, Davila placed second in the mile relay (3:50) and with teammates Miguel Fernandez, Daniel Crooks and Miranda, he added a bronze in the 100 relay (48.16).
Luis Piseno was the league’s second-best thrower, taking second in both discus (118”) and shot put (47’ 1/4”) while Glover placed third in high jump (5’2”).
Fredy Carrillo won the two-mile in 10:41 and Torres also gleamed with gold in the 800 (2:11). Kevin Landavazo came in fourth in long jump (18’ 3 1/2”) and triple jump (38’2”), Jeff Ramos earned bronze status in the 400 (56.3) and Federico Villa was fifth in the 3200 (11:39). Anthony Monroe also placed fifth in the 110 hurdles (18.17).
At the JV girls level, Mattie Maloney triumphed in pole vault (8’6”) and took fourth in triple jump (28’7”). Regan Albee finished third in the 1600 (6:01) and Samantha Bobadilla came in fifth in the 3200 (14:51).
The league’s top qualifiers will advance to the Division I Championships on Friday at West Valley High School.
