Lions win defensive battle against Colusa
The Corning Lions peewee football team is on its way to the Northern California Federation Peewee Division Super Bowl after beating the Colusa Cowboys 21-6 on Saturday in Colusa.
Corning (11-0) set up a Super Bowl match against a Chico Scorchers team (12-0) that has allowed just 19 points all season, including three shutouts in the playoffs, at noon Saturday at Enterprise High School in Redding.
To get there, Chase Aulabaugh scored on a 3-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and again from 6 yards out in the third quarter. Mikey Rodriguez, who set up Aulabaugh's second score with a 61-yard run, closed out the scoring with a minute remaining in the game on a 35-yard touchdown run.
The Cowboys only touchdown came after Shane Calcagno slipped to the outside for a 42-yard run in the second quarter and Christian Lyss scored on a 7-yard run on the next play, but the Lions stuffed the conversion attempt.
Colusa (8-4) entered halftime down 7-6 and the defense kept the game close until Rodriguez scored late in the fourth quarter.
Rodriguez intercepted a pass in the third quarter and Omar Gomez and Isaiah Castro had sacks for the Corning defense.
